The interior was originally inspired by a Fifth Avenue apartment in New York which was photographed for an Italian lifestyle magazine. The Tram Converter Station No 14 transformed the main grid power to the voltage required by the trams which trundled down Magill Road into the city. Built in 1948 the station operated for eight years before being decommissioned in 1956, shortly before all tramlines except the Glenelg line were closed. A decision I’m sure is rued by many a politician now. The station then became a scientific research laboratory and a decade later it was again converted to a studio and gallery for glass blowers.
The current owners then purchased the property inspired by the large open spaces and the unique industrial features. As the residential conversion evolved the Tuscan influences from the owners’ previous home started to take hold. Muted greys and white became the décor theme to soften the industrial edge. Large glass block windows were cut into the very substantial concrete walls to flood sunlight into the spacious interior.
The house is entered from the lower level which includes a casual family / living area, large guest bedroom with a two-way / ensuite bathroom, another bedroom or study and a laundry. White open stairs lead upstairs to the main open plan living area of the residence which incorporates the kitchen and dining. The walls and ceiling are the original rough poured concrete and the ornate Art Deco ventilation grates have been converted to recessed lighting. The large front balcony provides views to the city and the master bedroom has a balcony which overlooks the six metre, fully tiled, courtyard pool. The owners intended installing a large sail to shade their cars but now that they have decided to sell, have left this option for the lucky new owners.
The landscaping features gravel, grey stepping stones, wisteria and hedging. Ensuring a water wise garden and easy maintenance.
Situated in the sought after eastern suburb of Magill, with the foothills as a back drop and easy access to the city.
Price range $590,000—$620,000.
