Mid-Century Modern, Renovated throughout with City Views.
This mid-century modern architects own home offers more than just impressive accommodation and stunning City views. With a rich documented history, this family residence has an interesting story to tell about its original creator, architect Philip George Brian Claridge 'Brian' (1924 - 1979) and his friend, prominent Adelaide post-war modern artist Wladyslaw Dutkiewicz (1918 - 1999) who have both left their stamp on this home for future generations to enjoy. Wladyslaw Dutkiewicz has quite literally left his mark by way of a large painting, applied directly to the living room wall as you enter the home. This treasure was hidden under layers of wall paint until my owners stripped back the paint and this artwork was revealed in all its glory. Historic photographs document the painting and details the life and times of both the architect Brian Claridge and the artist Wladyslaw Dutkiewicz. More information can be found at the links below.
The current caretakers recognised the immense potential in this piece of paradise and they've respectfully highlighted the mid-century features while adding modern amenities through head to toe renovations and extension. There's so much to take in and so many interesting aspects to this home and garden.
From the moment you arrive you can see the City and sea views from the street, a beautifully landscaped front garden with feature lighting and original stone paths and retaining walls which ensures this haven blends into the natural environment, not the other way around.
Upon entering, you are greeted by original understated floor tiles, the large Dutkiewicz wall painting, the warmth of stone walls, one housing a gas log fire place and cabling for your wall mounted television, while glossy Oak timber floors anchor the home throughout. Two sets of thermal glass sliding doors lead you to a paved patio and covered pergola deck where the City views can be best admired. The kitchen with extraordinary storage, quality appliances, glass splashbacks and soft closing cabinetry is well connected to this living room and outdoor spaces.
As you head down the long passageway towards the bedrooms, you pass by original 1952 timber shelves alongside a modern in built study desk. Off this passageway are bedrooms 2 and 3 both with built in robes and desks, ceiling fans and split system air conditioners, while bedroom 4 also with robes and a ceiling fan has a gorgeous natural stone wall with louvre windows. A contemporary bathroom with deep bath and separate shower service those bedrooms along with several linen cupboards.
A second living room (or 5th bedroom if required) with split system air con and a ceiling fan is wired for sound' and ready to wall hang your television and with a sliding door, there's independent access or a sunny spot to enjoy the morning sun amongst the glorious front gardens.
The main bedroom suite is quite the stunner with yet another split system air con, ceiling fan and a walk in robe as large as a bedroom, more than enough to impress the Sex and the City girls! The ensuite bathroom is contemporary and modern and presents like it hasn't even been used! A sliding door leads out to the rear patio where views of the City, suburbs and setting sun will mesmerise you.
The gardens enhance the natural surrounds with easy care irrigated mostly native plantings, meandering pathways and hidden nooks and crannies to explore. Two large rainwater tanks help with cost effective watering, there's a small garden shed and even a water lily pond where koalas have been spotted having a drink. The elevated patio connects the two wings of the home and is the ideal spot for gully breezes and admiring those twinkling City lights or enjoy the same in any weather on the covered deck. There's a double carport and third off street spot and a large workshop/studio could have a multitude of uses. Within the workshop are some timber shelves and a desk which were removed from the house and no doubt utilised by the architect in recording his designs and ideas. This large space has potential to be used for garden and handyman work, perhaps an artist studio or hobby room or even a rumpus room for the kids.
The location is hard to beat, living amongst the gum trees housing abundant birdlife, resident koalas and lizards by the dozen and the occasion visiting echidna. Enchanting Michael Perry Reserve, Burnside's Newland Reserve, Ferguson Park and a myriad of bush walking trails are all just minutes away. You can enjoy cosmopolitan eating and shopping along Norwood Parade and explore antique and homewares stores at the bottom of Magill Road. Lots of schooling options including St Peters Girls, Pembroke and Rostrevor Colleges and it's publicly zoned for Norwood Morialta and Burnside Primary.
Wow ... what a home!
