A Little Bit Of History!
In 1885, Ellen Starling (nee Blaker) and her daughter Ellen "Nellie" Josephine Starling relocated from Victoria to 49 Stevenson Street, Nailsworth, following the death of husband and father, Joseph Mitchell Starling.
In 1903, at age 35, Nellie married Andrew Whyte Hendry, age 42, at her mother's home. They had two children, a daughter Ellen Gene in 1908, and a son Eric, who was born in 1910, but sadly passed away days later.
Andrew had founded the Institute for the Blind in 1884, with the aspiration to assist others, blind as he himself was since age 14, to educate themselves and find gainful employment. The Institute for the Blind was renamed by an act of parliament in recognition of their good work in 1974 as the Royal Society for the Blind.
Andrew died in 1918 at age 58, and shortly after his passing Nellie founded the Burwood Nursing Home in 1920 and became known as Sister, and later Matron Hendry.
Initially a maternity hospital, the building stretched across several house blocks from Stevenson to Burwood streets, with the attached 49 Stevenson Street as Matron Hendry's personal residence.
Burwood Nursing Home closed in the early 1940s, and Matron Hendry passed away in 1947, at the home of her daughter in Kensington Gardens.
