I'm told it was around 1955 the Professor of Architecture at Adelaide University set a project for the Architecture students, to design a home to suit a 1,174sqm block of land he owned at 9 Fulton Crescent, Glen Osmond.

The students needed to take into consideration the needs of a family, the natural peaceful setting, the size and elevation of the block, the stunning 180 degree coastline and city views, and the use of the summer and the winter sun.

The winning design was the family home he built in 1958.

54 years on, and in fairly original condition, the floor plan and the attributes this home offers comfortably fit with our Mediterranean style of living today.

The home is built over 2 levels or 2 wings, being the living areas and the sleeping areas. Beneath the home is a double garage and a workshop or storage area.

The wide and welcoming front terrace, with spectacular views to Glenelg and over the Gulf, through the city and out to Tea Tree Gully, is ideal for entertaining or just relaxing with a drink when you come home from work. Even in the cooler months the current Owner enjoys most evening meals on the terrace.

The terrace leads you through the front door to the open plan sitting room, dining area and a his and her study. These rooms have lots of glass to shower the rooms in natural light and to offer magical day and night views. Thoughtfully, the study has a concertina timber door and can be separated from the living area if you have guests or want privacy.

Also on the ground level is the kitchen, the laundry and a bathroom.

It's up a few stairs to the second wing and we find 4 good sized bedrooms, a full bathroom (with a bath) and a small wine cellar. The original plan shows bedroom 2 adjoins bedroom 3 with a concertina door so the rooms could be open plan or closed for privacy. This could easily be re-instated today.

I asked the Owner to mention the things we might not see at first. These included
* The study has a built-in ladies desk and a gentlemans desk
* For easy living there's a laundry chute
* There's an ash chute from the fireplace
* The firewood cupboard adjacent to the open fire in the
sitting room is a 2 way cupboard so it can be stocked
from outside, making it easier to fill
* The linen cupboard is cedar lined
* The kitchen has a sturdy fold out bench. Fabulous if you
are entertaining and need more bench top space, and ideal
for children if you wish an eat-in kitchen
* Through the home there are 3 large windows that can open
as doors
* The windows are large and there are high windows that can
be opened at night to allow the gully breezes to cool
the home in hot evenings
* One of the upstairs bedrooms has a private set of stairs
out to the garden
* There's a secret set of stairs in the garden to the
street.

For your comfort there is reverse cycle air conditioning, open fireplace, rain water tanks and a visitor's car park.

The current Owner has kept the original decor throughout, which was mod for the 50's and 60's the new Owner may wish to redecorate to their own tastes whether that is today's decor or reflective of the 1950's. Both decor styles would enhance the property.

The dwelling is positioned for both privacy and to make the most of the sun. Almost no direct sun comes into the dwelling during the summer months, whilst the house is flooded with warming sunlight in winter. The sun can warm the inner walls upstairs and releases the heat in the home at night.

Nestled with its back into the hill and set well back from the street, the current Owner rarely closes the curtains. Every night the view is different. Twinkling lights of Adelaide, the moon setting over the gulf, beautiful sunsets, and even the brooding storms approaching are all delightful to watch.

During special events it's a birds eye view of the fireworks displays. You'll marvel at your own private Roulettes show as they swoop around below the house and startle as the F1.11's roar over the roof ridge line to line up the straight to start the Clipsal500.

Glen Osmond is truly a magical suburb it is set an easy 15 minute drive from the city, 5 minutes from Burnside Village and is a tranquil natural setting. You wake to the sounds of magpie's warbling and kookaburra's laughing. The things most of us only hear while away on holidays.
